Light yourself on fire and get pregnant?

Chinese medicine experts prescribe some pretty exotic therapies; cupping, drinking herbal teas with ingredients like dried seahorses, and Gua Sha or “scraping” to name a few. (As if sticking needles into your body wasn’t enough!)

Maybe you’ve heard of one of my favorites called moxa therapy? Also referred to as moxa or moxibustion. Research has shown that it acts as an emmenagogue, that is, an agent that increases blood circulation to the pelvic area and uterus and stimulates menstruation.

Moxa therapy involves lighting yourself on fire. Well, almost.

It involves lighting an herb on fire and warming specific acupoints or areas with the ember by holding it close to your body (but without burning yourself!).

One of the greatest things about moxa therapy is that you can do it on yourself at home after you’ve been properly instructed by a professional.

What is moxa therapy?

The herb used for moxa is called Ai Ye in Chinese medicine, or Artemisia Vulgaris in Latin, commonly known as Mugwort.

It can frequently be found growing along hillsides, forests and grassy areas.

For external uses, the herb is dried and comes in many forms, including; an herbal tincture, a loose herb, small individual cones, or a rolled up cigar-like pole or a pole that’s been treated to produce very little smoke (known as smokeless moxa).

In some cases, it’s added to Chinese herbal formulas and taken internally.

What does moxa do?

In Chinese medical terms, when applied topically by warming specific acupoints or areas of your body, such as your lower abdomen, moxa does the following:

  • Warms yang (needed for hormones)

  • Strengthens qi (needed to build new cells)

  • Moves blood (to prevent clots, fibroids, polyps etc.)

  • Improves digestion (to feed healthy eggs and uterine lining)

  • Relieves pain and cramping

Most likely you’ve heard the terms yin and yang. Generally speaking, yin refers to the fluids of your body, like blood; while yang refers to warmth and function of biological activities.

Both are necessary for healthy reproductive function, as is a harmonious balance between the two. They need each other to serve their purpose. Yang can’t complete it’s function if it doesn’t have yin to work with, while yin needs yang to transform and move the yin.

Yang energy supports your body in producing hormones crucial for healthy follicular growth, ovulation, implantation and pregnancy. Moxa therapy is one of the most effective ways to boost your yang energy.

By boosting yang, the body can also strengthen qi, the vital energy needed to build new cells. “Warming the yang”, as we say, supports digestive function thereby providing nutrients to make healthy eggs and a thriving uterine lining.

Moxa therapy encourages the movement of blood, as well. Old blood can be broken down and flushed out, while fresh nutrient-rich healthy blood flows in and nourishes your reproductive organs.

Because moxa therapy is so healing through its warming and qi-strengthening function, it naturally relieves pain and relaxes cramping, allowing for a relaxed and follicular tubes.

How moxa helps with pregnancy success:

Follicular Phase:

  • Builds a healthy lining

  • Develops a healthy egg

  • Improves blood flow to the uterus and ovaries

Ovulatory Phase:

  • Supports the body to produce necessary hormones

  • Provides warmth and movement to mature the egg and complete ovulation (like hatching an egg)

  • Relaxes the fallopian tubes so the boys can swim up and get the job done

Implantation phase:

  • Relaxes the fallopian tubes so the fertilized embryo can travel down the dube

  • Relaxes the uterus for implantation

  • Supports release of progesterone

  • Improves blood flow to the uterus

Pregnancy:

  • Strengthens the uterus to hold the embryo

  • Improves blood flow to the uterus to nourish the embryo

  • Encourages continuous hormonal support

  • Stops spotting

Menstrual phase:

  • Breaks down old blood (fibroids, endometriosis, polyps, clots, etc.)

  • Relieves menstrual cramps

  • Relieves low back pain

Although many of these age-old Chinese medical therapies may sound exotic, time-tested results (I mean, we’re talking thousands of years here) have proven that techniques like moxa therapy can work miracles.

In my own clinical experience, I’m amazed over and over again by the results. I love any opportunity I get to empower women with the tools they can use at home for a successful pregnancy. Moxa therapy is no exception.

So how on earth would you do this at home? Below is a short demo you can watch.

However I recommend using moxa with the guidance of a Licensed Acupuncturist or my program, Fertility Activation Method, to learn where and how to use the moxa for the maximum fertility benefits.
