Have you had these important tests that affect your fertility?

You’ve probably been to your doctor by now, or maybe even a fertility specialist, and had several tests done. Maybe you received a diagnosis like Diminished Ovarian Reserve (DOV), Poor Egg Quality, Premature Ovarian Failure (POF) or PCOS.

Or maybe you were given the diagnosis of Unexplained Infertility. If so, I bet that although you were glad to hear they couldn’t find anything wrong, you still wonder why the heck you’re not getting pregnant.

Or maybe your doctor just assumed your eggs must be bad if they couldn’t find anything and pinned it on your age.

While your diagnosis or lack there of may or may not be helpful, that doesn’t mean that: 1) you can’t do anything about it, and 2) it may not have anything to do with the fact that you’re not getting pregnant.

Sure, at 40 years old you’re not as fertile as you were at 20, but many women have healthy babies well into their 40’s. You may not be conceiving because you could be deficient in Iron or Vitamin D.

Depending on how comprehensive your doctor was, you may need additional testing to solve your infertility puzzle. Oftentimes it’s just a matter of taking nutritional supplements.

(You can read more about the importance of nutritional supplementation in my Free Fertility Supplement Guide.)

Here’s a few tests I recommend you get:

MTHFR Factor

Most women don’t know if they’re positive for the genetic mutation called MTHFR. If they are, then they can not break down folic acid which causes elevated homocysteine levels. This is a commonly known risk factor contributing to recurrent pregnancy loss, preeclampsia, infertility, Down Syndrome and other serious concerns surrounding pregnancy.

40% of the population is MTHFR positive. 70% of women diagnosed with infertility are MTHFR positive. As a result, I recommend that everyone take an MTHFR-safe prenatal.

I do recommend getting tested for the MTHFR gene. If you can’t get tested through your doctor, there are several companies online, like livinggenes.com, where you can test from home.

If you are positive, I make additional supplement recommendations in the MTHFR Support Protocol in my Free Fertility Supplement Guide.

Vitamin D

Low Vitamin D levels can cause infertility in men and women, miscarriages and many other healthy issues. It’s a common and serious issue, yet very easy to test and treat. *85% of women with PCOS are deficient in Vitamin D!

Inflammation Markers – Many studies have shown that inflammation is at the root PCOS, endometriosis and infertility, and even male infertility.

Iron

Iron deficiency is linked with infertility, miscarriage, low birth weight babies, preterm labor, postpartum depression and iron deficiency in infants. I’ve had patients who got pregnant soon after simply adding an iron supplement to their daily regimen.

Thyroid

Hypothyroidism is extremely common and contributes to infertility and miscarriage. Your TSH levels should be between 1.0-2.0 to get pregnant. Women with endometriosis are at an increased risk for hypothyroidism. It’s also worth noting that many women with these conditions are also MTHFR-positive.

Both endometriosis and Hashimoto’s can go undiagnosed. Almost all cases of hypothyroidism in the U.S. are due to an autoimmune condition rather than an iodine deficiency. (Iodine deficiency is more common in developing countries.)

You can have autoimmune hypothyroidism without testing positive for the thyroid antibodies. Once you’ve tested positive, you’re already at an advanced stage.

Food Sensitivities

Food allergies contribute to inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, like Hypothyroidism and Endometriosis. You can either eliminate all the foods you suspect may be triggering an inflammatory response, or you can get tested to confirm which ones are indeed harming your fertility.

Vaginal Bacteria

Bacterial Vaginosis, Ureaplasma and Mycoplasma can make it impossible for sperm to survive and fertilize your embryo. If positive, you can take an antibiotic and follow my supplement recommendations for maintaining a healthy vaginal environment.

STDs

Chlamydia is the most common cause of infertility. It can be asymptomatic. Even if you’ve been with the same partner for years, it’s well worth having this simple test done. If left untreated, chlamydia can spread and infect other parts of the female reproductive system, in particular the uterus and fallopian tubes, which can result in pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).

If your doctor cannot order these tests for you or you still have to pay a large out of pocket amount, you may consider ordering tests online from the company, Everly Well. You receive the kit by mail, provide the sample in the comfort of your own home, mail back the kit and receive the results online within days. Use this link to receive 10% off.
