Is yoga, visualization or nutrition sabotaging my pregnancy success?

If you’re like many of the woman I know who are eager to get pregnant, you’ve incorporated a variety of therapies into your fertility-enhancing regimen; fertility yoga, guided visualizations, fertility foods, supplements, acupuncture, massage, hypnosis and so on. Why not throw everything you’ve got at it?

But maybe you wonder, is there such thing as doing TOO much?

Are you sabotaging your pregnancy with all the therapies you’re doing?

I’m a big fan of empowering women with as many tools as possible to support their pregnancy goals. Usually these tools are great for your general wellbeing anyway.

For instance, I love yoga. I’m a huge believer in the many benefits of practicing yoga regularly. I think everyone should do it whether you’re trying to conceive or not.

No.

If you’re worried about cancelling out the benefits of one therapy with another, rest assured that most therapies compliment each other. In fact, they work synergistically to enhance the effects of the other treatments.

For example, yoga opens up the hips, relaxes back muscles, and calms the nervous system. When my patient practices yoga, the energy that I direct through her body with acupuncture can flow more smoothly. The channels have been opened and the messages I send with the acupuncture treatment to the reproductive organs are more easily and clearly transmitted through the nervous system and tissue.

On the same note, when I prescribe acupressure protocols and moxa therapy to my patients to practice at home, we make faster progress and see more immediate results.

In other words, what you do in your daily life can make my job a whole lot easier as your healthcare practitioner.

Likewise, guided fertility visualizations and meditations calm the nervous system and reduce stress. You establish a growing awareness of your thought patterns and mind-body connection.

Science is now discovering through the study of Epigenetics that changing your thoughts can change your DNA. So again, when used with other therapies, the effects produced can be even more profound.

If you’re taking nutritional supplements or following a fertility-focused diet, you’re giving your body with the nutrients it needs to make hormones, build healthy eggs, and create a thriving uterine lining.

Nutrition is vital for changing your body at a cellular level and improving biological function. It’s the foundational support for all other therapies.

Acupressure and acupuncture will help to build new cells and circulate blood, hormones and nutrients to your ovaries, but without the necessary nutritional support, it won’t have much to work with.

Maybe.

That being said, when it comes to designing a nutritional fertility treatment plan, there is such thing as too many cooks in the kitchen. It’s a good idea to consult one professional who can successfully guide you to reaching your pregnancy goals.

If you mix Chinese herbs with another random self-prescribed herbal regimen, you run the risk of confusing your body rather than making trackable progress.

The other thing to consider is spacing your therapies apart. For instance, I don’t recommend going straight to your yoga class right after your acupuncture treatment or vice versa.

Each therapy produces a different energetic effect on your body. It takes some time for your body to integrate the benefits of one therapy before responding to the next. I suggest spacing out therapies like yoga, qigong, and acupuncture by a few hours.

So if yoga, qigong, massage, guided visualizations or acupressure are each therapies you enjoy, then by all means, add them all to your fertility enhancement program!

Yes.

On the other hand, if you’re totally stressing yourself out because every single moment of your day is filled with fertility-enhancing activities, then consider taking inventory of which ones you actually enjoy and which ones feel like a giant burden.

You can then weigh the benefit vs. burden factor of those activities and decide whether to cut it out completely or replace it with something you actually look forward to doing.

If the activity is causing you more stress than it’s worth, then it can’t be all that therapeutic.

But if the therapy reduces stress, even better!
